Merdeka Special: Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026

Malaysia has always been known for its warm smiles, vibrant culture, and premier healthcare. Now, with the launch of the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 (MYMT 2026), the country is set to bring all these strengths together in a landmark campaign that positions Malaysia as one of the world’s leading destinations for medical tourism.

Healing Meets Hospitality

More than just words, this new tagline reflects the true spirit of Malaysia Healthcare, where advanced medicine is delivered with a human touch.Healthcare in Malaysia is not just about medical procedures. MYMT 2026 brings together a holistic ecosystem that blends modern medicine, wellness, Traditional & Complementary Medicine (T&CM), and preventive care. From life-saving surgeries to rejuvenating therapies like stem cell and anti-aging treatments, patients can look forward to an experience that goes beyond recovery.

With Malaysia’s diverse tourism offerings, an extra dimension is added into the journey. Imagine coming for a knee replacement and leaving with memories of island sunsets, cultural festivals, and authentic local flavours. This seamless integration of healthcare and tourism is what makes Malaysia truly unique.

Recognising Centres of Excellence

The numbers speak for themselves. In 2024, Malaysia welcomed 1.6 million healthcare travellers, generating RM2.72 billion in revenue—a 21% increase from the year before. With MYMT 2026, the target is even higher: to grow the industry towards RM12 billion by 2030.

Behind this growth is a network of globally trained doctors, internationally accredited hospitals, and patient-first services. Malaysia’s reputation as a safe, trusted, and affordable healthcare destination continues to strengthen, drawing travellers from Indonesia, China, the Middle East, and beyond.

As part of MYMT 2026, the Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital (FMTH) programme shines a spotlight on hospitals that set the gold standard in patient care. Institut Jantung Negara, Island Hospital Penang, Mahkota Medical Centre, and Subang Jaya Medical Centre have been shortlisted, with the winning hospital to be announced in December 2025. These centres represent Malaysia’s finest in clinical expertise and hospitality-driven care.

A Familiar Face: Malaysia’s Sweetheart

To help share this story with the world, Malaysia’s very own Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza has been named ambassador for MYMT 2026. Loved across the region, her presence adds a personal and emotional connection to the campaign, embodying values of trust, compassion, and Malaysian pride.

Looking Ahead

With MYMT 2026, Malaysia is not just inviting the world to seek treatment; it is offering a journey of healing wrapped in hospitality. Whether for advanced medical care, wellness retreats, or preventive treatments, Malaysia Healthcare promises something rare in today’s world: the assurance that you will be cared for, not just treated. Upon your return, you‘ll realise that it’s more than just a treatment, it’s a whole experience!
